I Understand: A Letter to My Younger Self

Dear 17 year old Me

I know things are not going as you wanted them to be. I know you are sad. I know you are lonely. I know you wish that someone was there to to hold your hand and make you feel that everything is going to be okay sooner or later. I understand what you are going through.

I know how you feel.

Trust me, it is okay to feel like this.

But then letting yourself drown into the negative feelings, is that right?

Ask yourself.

No! It is wrong. It was not your fault. Stop blaming yourself. It was meant to be. As they say, things happen for a reason. You will come out stronger. Have confidence in yourself.

Do you realise how much everyone loves you? I understand that you want everyone to be happy. But do you know what makes them happy? Your happiness makes them happy. You heard that before? Yes! Your class teacher was right. Your smile brightens up their world.

You are an amazing person. You are the best. Believe in yourself. The world is not going to end if things fall apart. You can set them back into their place. It will take time. But all will be fine. You will grow as a person. You’ll be more mature.

Will these things matter after 20 years? No they won’t. I am you. They don’t matter much to me today, after five years. I can see that they won’t matter to me at all in another 15 years. Time is healing me. Time heals all of us.

Get up and fight. Show your fears that you aren’t scared to face them. Trust me you can do it. Trust yourself. Trust us. Please. Just for once.

With love

Your 22 year old Self
